In spite of the fact that these people often flee to the free world to escape inprisonment and death, in Hungary they find themselves inprisoned – the detention center for asylum seekers in Nyirbator, a town 260 km from Budapest (in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg county, Eastern Hungary) could hardly be called anything else than a prison. After having inspected the detention center in Nyirbator in 2012, Mate Szabo, Comissioner for Fundamental Rights heavily criticized the circumstances he found there. This place serves as a detention center for no more than 12 months for single men coming from outside Europe who are staying in the country illegaly or who are unable to prove their identity by providing original documents.
